Sophie tilted her pixie shag. “Huh?”

“What did Seabrook want you to tell me?”

Sophie raised her chin in acknowledgment. “Oh. He said stay in bed today and rest. And if you didn’t, he’d get you something that would make you sleep, but that you—”

“Gracious, Sophie, I’m fine, and I have to see to my house. File insurance. At least for the water damage if nothing else.” The whole Brea-August death situation paled in relation to her personal life now. Someone waged a vendetta against her, and until someone proved her wrong, she returned to watching over her shoulder. “How bad’s the damage now that we can see it?”

“Your house is fine. My house is fine. You can stay at your place or stay here again, totally up to you,” she said and rose from the table. “Let me fix you some eggs.”

Sophie had sacrificed her fear of the spirits for Callie’s well-being for one night by returning to Hatha Heaven. However, no reason for her to do it again. “My place then,” Callie said, studying the kitchen, then over the bar into the living room. Sunshine poured in those windows, too, tinted like lemonade this time of day, and she figured no haunt in its right mind would fight that cheery environment.

“Um, I’ll stay here,” Sophie said.

“Why? Thought your spiritual guests were too rowdy.”

Sophie dropped the spatula on the stove top and whirled around. “Do you see how close you came to losing your house?”

“Why, no, Sophie,” Callie replied, her sarcasm caustic. “I missed that.”

“Make fun. Go ahead.” Sophie jerked around to her cooking, the skillet popping. She lowered the temperature and leaned on the counter, her back to her friend.

Callie jumped from her seat and reached around Sophie for a hug. “What did I miss last night? What’s wrong?” Fear slithered into her chest. “Nobody’s hurt?”

“Nobody’s hurt.”

Relieved, Callie gently shook her friend’s shoulder. “That’s what’s important. So what’s upsetting you?”

Sophie stared at the oil sizzling in the skillet, as if it spelled out her words for her. “Here they keep me awake. There”—she nodded toward Chelsea Morning—“they tried to kill us.”
